The vertical answer to fulfillment pressures: Roboshuttle’s rise in Europe

Posted by Andres Espuelas on May 13, 2025 3:35:53 AM

In recent years, Europe has been at the forefront of digital transformation in the logistics sector. Automation and robotics are no longer future trends — they’re a present-day necessity. In a market that demands speed, efficiency, and accuracy, in which there is a lack of logistics space, companies are turning to intelligent, scalable solutions to make the most of their storage space while responding to the pressures of e-commerce and omnichannel fulfillment. And the story of our Tote-To-Person solution has been very close to the development of the automation in Europe.

From RS3 to RS11: Breaking boundaries in vertical automation 🤖

The evolution of the RoboShuttle system exemplifies the rapid pace of innovation in warehouse automation. What began with the RoboShuttle3, designed to reach up to 3 meters in height, has now evolved into the RoboShuttle11 — capable of servicing storage systems up to 12 meters tall. This leap in vertical reach is more than just a technical upgrade; it's a strategic response to one of Europe's most pressing challenges: space optimization.

By doubling the accessible height range, the RS11 offers unprecedented storage density, enabling businesses to store more without expanding their footprint. It’s a game-changer for urban distribution centers and high-throughput operations, particularly in Europe where real estate is limited and expensive.

This major advancement in capability hasn't gone unnoticed. From being the winner for the IFOY (International Intralogistics and Forklift of the Year) Awards back in 2020 with RS3, the RS11 has been nominated for the 2025 IFOY Award, one of the most prestigious recognitions in the logistics and automation industry. The nomination reflects not only the technological maturity of the system but also its market relevance and impact on real-world operations. RS

The combination with RS Air makes this solution unique for the European market

RoboShuttle V4.0 – launched during LogiMAT 2025 to the European market - is a game-changer for high-volume order fulfillment. With faster throughput and five times more storage capacity, it’s built to handle both consistent day-to-day traffic and those intense peak season spikes. By teaming up RS shuttles with the new RS Air robots, it delivers smooth, flexible operations no matter the demand. Plus, with enhanced safety features and easy integration into your existing setup, you can scale up without missing a beat. The solution can achieve 600 totes per hour per workstation  and a storage density of 45 totes per square meter.

Another of the standout strengths of the new RoboShuttle solution is its ability to handle a wide variety of storage containers, including from standard 600×400 mm totes to bigger dimension of 650×850 mm trays, and even mixed-size cartons. This diversity makes it ideal for businesses managing a broad range of SKUs — from pharmaceuticals to consumer electronics — and adds a layer of flexibility that traditional systems struggle to match.

Built for Europe: A Solution with a Local Focus

Designed with European operations in mind, this solution is implemented in more than 20 warehouses in Europe as today. It fits seamlessly into existing infrastructure without requiring major layout changes, making it a practical choice for businesses across the continent that are looking to upgrade without a complete overhaul.

This system was built to scale. Thanks to its modular design, businesses can expand storage, add robots, or integrate new workstations as demand grows — all without operational downtime. This ensures long-term adaptability, supporting business growth with minimal disruption. This is the case of Starlinks a leading supply chain solutions business, providing high quality end-to-end supply chain management and operations. The Saudi-Arabia-based company has implemented a total of over 250 mobile robots in which the RS8 solution is included over their 37,000 sqm fulfillment center in Saudi Arabia.

Another well-known 3PL company, GXO Logistics, Inc. has deployed first-of-its-kind large-scale robotics solution in France. The solution GXO has implemented comprises about 500 autonomous mobile robots (AMR) handling 70,000 bins on 5.5-meter-tall storage racks. The robots are used for picking activities and have significantly improved productivity, accuracy and safety on site. The lightweight robots are easy to transport and install, giving GXO the flexibility to quickly move them around the warehouse or deploy them to other facilities to meet seasonal changes.

My Jewellery, a female-led family-run business specialising in jewellery, fashion and accessories has also implemented 22 RoboShuttle systems and 66 P40 picking solution at their warehouse in Den Bosh (Netherlands). In the fashion industry, automation—especially AMR solutions—is key to improving sustainability, while also tackling major challenges like returns, order picking, and delivery speed.
