Women's History Month @ Geek+ : A Conversation with Fish Yu

Posted by J Goodner on Mar 10, 2022 12:00:19 AM

During a busy week in Women's History Month, we caught up with Fish Yu, Geek+'s Marketing Director for APAC and UK.

In honor of International Women's Day, we spotlight Fish Yu and her outstanding achievement within the company. In only three years, she has assumed a critical role in managing the satisfaction and expectations of clients, negotiating marketing campaigns with customers, and most importantly, making sure communication between the company and client is seamless.

Only three years ago, Fish joined Geek+ as an emerging startup. Fish faced many challenges in those early years of the company. Still, when reflecting on those times, she says those challenges motivated her to persevere. "...my team and I just kept working hard," she says, "we continued to chase after our goals, and the occasional obstacles pushed us all to become better."

No one can deny that tech is a male-dominated industry, with women only making up 19% of the global workforce. But Fish says she doesn't really notice a gender gap within our company, saying, "Our industry may appear to be predominantly male, but about 30% of our staff are ladies" and that "Virtually anyone, in any department, can take a leadership role and get great projects done."

Fish has quickly learned the ins and outs of customer satisfaction and brand positioning after several years of experience behind the scenes at Geek+. We talked with Fish briefly about what inspires her work in robotics as we explore what Women's History Month means to her.

Q: Hi Fish, thanks for joining me. Tell me, when did you join Geek+, and what's something you've found fascinating about your work here?

Fish: Thank you for having me. I joined in 2018 when Geek+ was still a startup. I think It's fascinating that warehouse robotics covers all industries. It is truly optimal for so many businesses. We help so many provide the very best in fast and efficient delivery services. Even when we're selling robots to warehouses, the end-customer is always our top priority when providing logistic solutions.

Q: Have you ever had a work experience at Geek+ that positively surprised you?

Fish: Yes, I've had the chance to meet top management in other major global companies. Geek+ is famous in other countries. I've been to many exhibitions, and many people know the Geek+ brand. It makes me proud to be a part of the company when people immediately recognize us. We also have the freedom and the resources to do real marketing. Geek+ allows us to create our own ideas and make them go live. And when we're satisfied with our own work, we can use that energy to improve the experience for our customers.

Q: What inspires your work the most?

Fish: Providing the very best in customer satisfaction... My favorite part of my job is keeping close communication with clients. I love to see the transformation a manual warehouse takes on when becoming a Geek+ smart warehouse. That process can be so intense that it can really surprise clients. For example, when you go from three-day delivery to same day, that's a significant improvement, and customers expecting deliveries will definitely notice it!

Q: What does Women's History Month mean to you?

Fish: Women's History Month is about recognizing and appreciating all women, including the working-class and housewives, even our elders who've contributed so much to where we are now. Our industry may appear to be predominantly male, but about 30% of our staff are ladies working in a wide variety of departments, from management to engineering. Virtually anyone in any department can take a leadership role and get great projects done.

Q: What's one thing you've learned since joining Geek+?

Fish: Even in challenging situations, always be positive. My advice for young women is to follow their passion in life. It doesn't matter so much about what you study as long as you work hard. If any young women want to pursue a career in the tech industry, don't be afraid and don't give up. You will not do a great job in every situation, especially when you're just starting. Just give it your best and keep a good attitude and spirit in everything you do.
